The Shape of Craft

The journey begins when material meets the eye.

An opening towards the boundless unknown. How far can it go?

There is a spark of excitement. Options are limitless.

Diving into techniques such as welding, grinding, slab making, glass slumping...

methods that are used to shape materials, playing with their boundaries to enhance and display the beauty.

It is an instinctive process, where the hands are guiding the maker.

We have evolved to find pleasure in beauty,  craftspeople distill the beauty of the world around them into something physical. During the process, a unique relationship is born between the maker and the material. With sensual interactions an intimate dialogue begins.

Techniques leave their fingerprint on the material, what originally went wrong within the process, could finally develop into a quality.

Working with an unfamiliar material opens a world of countless possibilities. Triggering a sense of freedom. As the maker becomes increasingly familiar with the material, limitations begin to appear. Nonetheless, the desire to achieve what initially was envisioned remains. That acts as the fuel to push the boundaries of the craft and the material itself, by working their way around them.
